Route 66 Roadtrip Leg 3: The End of the Trail

A Recap of the Mayhem

On this episode, one of our kids lies to a border patrol agent, Dan experiences life and death hugging a cliff face in coasts California and Melina Meets Bruce Willis.

Listen above to determine which of these events is dead-on accurate and which are slightly exaggerated for dramatic effect.

Arizona to California

On Day 7 of the trip, we left Williams AZ for the (relatively) short 7.5 hours jaunt to Anaheim, however our kids had other plans. One of them decided to pound back skittles like they were water in the desert and, well, we had some cleaning up to do in Kingman.

Luckily our schedule allowed for this type of multi-coloured disaster because as it turns out you SHOULD NOT attempt to visit Oatman, AZ if you are towing anything that gives you a total length over 20 feet and you are heading west on Old Route 66. (We are pushing 50 feet). Folks, the hairpin turns on the Oatman Highway portion of the Old Route just may be the last thrill you experience, if you take it towing a rig. One some of those turns you could probably see the back end of your trailer, which is not what one wants when sandwiched between a cliff face, and…well, nothing.

We would have fallen off the mountain if it wasn’t for this guide. This is the guide which warned about the Oatman section and was an absolute God-send for us on this trip. We highly reccommend it. If you would like to order a copy, it’s available on Amazon

An Unexpected Border

After our adventures in Kingman (where we got groceries), we made our way to the AZ/CA State Line, which suprised us with a border-style checkpoint we had no idea we would encounter. The California official was very interested if we had fruits, vegetables or firewood with us. Have a listen to find out how that went 🙂

Word to the wise: Get gas before you hit the desert. We paid $5.24/gal at Oasis in the Desert in Fenner, CA

Arrival in Anaheim

Luckily we arrived in Anaheim at the Anaheim Harbor RV Park which was the ideal base for exploring Disneyland and the rest of Southern California. Lucky for us, we arrived at the park on July 4th, and were treated to an amazing fireworks display from neighboring Disneyland. Seriously, you can see the tip of the Matterhorn from the park and it’s like your very own nightly fireworks show.

Disneyland…and Bruce Willis

We spent 3 amazing days at Disneyland, Including a super-embarrassing encounter for Melina with this guy…

Cars Land

THE reason we took the Route 66 trip was of course to see the sights that inspired the Disney/Pixar masterpiece, Cars.

Santa Monica Pier – End of the Route

The Famous Sourdough Sandwich

Pismo Beach

After 5 days in SoCal, we headed up the coast to Pismo Sands RV Resort. Pismo Beach is such a laid-back quintessential California beach town and we love it. For eats, make sure you hit up Old West Cinnamon Rolls and the famous Splash Cafe for some award-winning Clam Chowder

Hearst Caslte

There are no words – just go. You’ll thank us later

And then we went to Vegas…

Stay tuned for next week’s episode!!
