Route 66 Roadtrip Leg 4: The Road Home | Episode 16

Hello RV family – welcome to Episode 16, and the final episode of our Route 66 series. I suppose this episode isn’t really Route 66 based, but we did pick up some of it on the way home and it is the finishing leg of that trip which took us all the way down Route 66 from our home in Ontario Canada to California right to the End of the Trail Sign at Santa Monica Pier.

As always, we couldn’t have done this without a few tools along the way, namely our super-duper planning app: Roadtrippers as well as a hard copy of the EZ 66 Guide for Travellers which we picked up on the trip, but you can find on Amazon

If you want to try Roadtrippers, the basic account is free, but when you’re ready to upgrade to Roadtrippers Plus, (trust us, it’s worth it), you can sign up HERE and get $5 off your membership by using our exclusive listener code: RVCANUCKS

Vegas, Baby!

Likely the biggest note for RVers wanting to take the trip from California to Las Vegas is to note both the grade and heat, based on the time of year. As we were traveling in July, we needed to heed the road signs warning of engine exhaustion and reccommending that you don’t travel with your AC on in your vehicle, if possible, to avoid overheating. Trust us. The road to Vegas can be littered with abandoned cars on the side of the road that didn’t make the full journey. Stick to 55 mph and cycle the AC on and off as needed (we kept it on some of the time beause – black car, black seats, hot sun) and you will be fine.

we stayed at the Oasis Las Vegas Resort, which we detailed in Episode 11: Are RV Resorts Worth the Money? so we won’t re-hash that all here. You can get the details on that episode, but just know, this RV resort is right at the end of the strip, and is the perfect location if the bright lights are what you are in Vegas for.

As you all know, we travel with kids, so our Vegas trip was of the light on the wallet, and early to bed variety, and with only 2 nights, we had to work fast.

First up, after the very smooth check-in process, was to unhitch, grab a fabulous dinner at Raising Canes Chicken Fingers (like “take that Chik-fil-a” fabulous) and head down to the stripo. We easily and quickly found cheap parking in a garage right by the M&M store which accommodated our F-150 easily and walked out into the desert lights.

We hit the M&M Store, Hershey Store, took a look around New York, New York and walked up to the Bellagio Fountains (worth it). Have a listen to the full episode to find out what happens when it rains in Vegas.

The next day, we ventured out to Gold and Silver Pawn Shop (Home of Pawn Stars) and to Kounts Customs (Home of Counting Cars). Both were worth it if you enjoy both of those shows and were free to visit.

Moab

A mere 6.5 hours down the road and the landscape had changed again and we had arrived in Moab. I almost have no words for Moab. It was stunning. The highlights of our quick, 2 day stay in Moab were:

  • The Moab Museum
  • The Moab Diner
  • Our Campground on the edge of BLM lands (right beside Arches National Park), and
  • The Mill Canyon Dinosaur Track Site

As always we feel blessed that you take the time to tune in each week and we love taking you along on this journey.
