Why we love cast iron

To be honest, we shied away from cast iron for a looooong time. We thought it would be messy, inconsistent and too much maintenance to make it enjoyable. I am happy to say we were dead wrong. Here’s all the reason’s we’ve come to love cast iron as our main cooking tool:

  • Easy to use
  • Easy to Clean
  • Can cook way above 500 degrees making it versatile
  • Boosts the iron content in your food
  • A well seasoned pan is basically non-stick
  • Good heat distribution
  • Cook on the stove, oven or over the fire

What to look for in cast iron

If you’re new to the scene, it helps to purchase a set that is already pre-seasoned. You don’t have to, but it makes the initial seasoning process so much easier. Of course, we love to reuse and salvage where possible, so don’t overlook garage sales and antique stores for a good set, even if it needs a little TLC. Here’s a great video on how to restore some of those vintage finds that may be in rough shape.
