The 5 Best Roadtrip Apps | Episode 3

Top 5 Roadtripping Apps and Websites

In this episode we’ve rounded up our five favourite apps and website for planning a roadtrip and making life easier while on four wheels. We discovered how beneficial trip planning could be when we decided to drop everything, book some holidays and drive 3,000 km roundtrip to see the 2017 Solar Eclipse from Myrtle Beach. It was a huge eye opener on long-trips and a GREAT primer for our Route 66 Roadtrip in 2018 (which, by comparison was a 10,000 km road trip roundtrip!) Here’s what helped us:

1. Roadtrippers

Melina’s love for Roadtrippers has no bounds, seriously. We usually use the desktop version to plan our trips, but the app has all the same great features that allow you to access your trip on or offline. Here’s some of what we love:

  • Full trip planning with suggestions
  • Filter stops by a multitude of categories:
    • Food (even narrow down by type)
    • Accommodation
    • Outdoor Recreation
    • RV parks and campgrounds
    • Points of interest (everything from holiday light displays to museums and national landmarks)
    • Attractions
    • Sports
    • Nightlife
    • You name it…Roadtrippers has it
  • PRE-POPULATED TRIP GUIDES!!!! – Just pick one and go – no thinking and minimal tweaking!!
  • Enter your tow vehicle and rig for an estimate of fuel cost (you can set it to Canadian Dollars and KM as well!)
  • Pictures
  • Reviews
  • Blogs
  • Free or Paid (PRO) version

2. Pilot/Flying J App

  • Trip Planner
  • Easily Find a Pilot/Flying J Travel Center that has:
    • RV Lanes for Fuel (not necessary but sooo nice!)
    • Overnight Parking for RVs
    • Restaurant Selection
    • Clean Showers
    • Propane Fill
    • Dumping Station

To Download the App, visit the app store you use on your phone.

3. RV Parky

FREE!!

Simply tap to find your location and search for a place to stay. Read reviews, call ahead and know you have somewhere to lay your head for the night on long road trips. Has basic filter functionality, but not as robust as Allstays (see below)

Good old Google Maps

The gold standard in marriage protection! We use Google Maps to find stuff, and to check out the satellite view of any Gas Stations or grocery stores we need to go to, in order to make sure we can safely (and with little embarrassment) get in and get out.

Download wherever you get your apps.

Allstays Camp & RV

Picks up where RV parky leaves off:

  • Slightly more results within Canada
  • Filter by Provincial/State Park
  • Find Dump Stations
  • Discover Low-Clearance Routes
  • Find Walmarts that allow Overnighting
  • Find Big Box Stores and Outdoor Stores at the touch of a button

RV Parks mentioned on this episode:

In episode 3 of the RV Canucks Podcast, we also talk about some of the best places we’ve had an overnighted:

Our first listener question!!!

I squealed when I saw we had multiple listener questions even after only two episodes. This week we answer a question about Bike Racks! Check out our answer at 17:05 and if YOU want to ask a question give us a shout:
