Our Tips for Traveling Further:

  1. Take advantage of half-days (Consider packing the night before and leaving after work to get a few hours down the road, instead of leaving the next morning)
  2. Order ahead to the next town to pick up a pizza to eat on the road
  3. Have a rough estimate of how far you want to travel each day, but don’t hem yourself in! If you feel like going longer – do it! Want to stop short? That’s okay too!
  4. Don’t pre-plan overnights – use the RV Parky App or Roadtrippers to find an RV park a few hours before you want to stop.
  5. Don’t worry about not finding a safe place to lay your head. If you don’t find an RV Park, you’ll be able to find a place to boondock for the night. If you aren’t familiar with boondocking, check out our episode on it which outlines the etiquette and tells you our favourite places to park for the night.
  6. Consider using a hotel for the night. Sometime we use travel points for this and we always stay somewhere that has free breakfast. *Remember to use Google Satellite view to make sure there’s room for your rig in the parking lot first*
  7. Piggy Back on a Public Holiday so you don’t have to take as many vacation days, or will get a longer holiday.

How to Travel Farther with Kids

  1. Limit water intake!! Seriously this was our biggest failing. What comes in must come out – and that means lot of pee breaks
  2. Whatever food you have for snack WILL get eaten within the first hour on the road. Don’t put your eggs in one basket – keep some of the snacks in your rig for later when you run out!
  3. Consider making “boxed lunches” – we do this with empty Leftover food containers from Costco. Box up meal and snacks and everyone has their own box – let the kids know that’s IT. If they eat it, then its gone. You’ll find they learn pretty quick to ration.
  4. Get travel neck pillows!
  5. Utilize stops at Rest Stops, Groceries and visitor information centers for everyone to stretch their legs and run around/toss a ball for a few minutes.
  6. Pre-load devices with movies and shows they can pick from. Let them make their own playlists to play over the car stereo
  7. Hand them a device to take pictures with from the backseat – this has resulted in some great memories for our kids!
  8. Road Trip Bingo & the License Plate Game are great time-savers for any age.
  9. Listen to Podcasts!! (Speaking of which, have you subscribed to ours? We would love it if you did!!) – Two of our Faves are ‘Brains On‘ and ‘Stuff You Missed in History Class
  10. Make up your own games!
