RV Canucks Campground Review

SITES

If you listened to the podcast, Dan mentioned that the only form of acceptable camping for his family growing up was full-on nature camping at a provincial, state or national park. While we prefer this method of camping overall, we’ve come to LOVE the amenities offered from RV parks, especially when we are using them as a home base for sightseeing.

We have stayed in both pull-through and back-in sites, and the turning radius can be a touch tight in some cases, but nothing that will lead to domestic disturbances on the parking pad! Take it slow and you will be fine. In fact, the KOA can accommodate up to 100′ setups. Just be sure to indicate your accurate length and slideouts during the reservation process.

CHECK-IN

Check-in was a super easy process, with several lanes available to park while you check in. Note, the speed limit in the park is 8 kph – and they mean it. There are kids EVERYWHERE, so take note when traversing the park.

Bathhouse/Restrooms

We say this without a moments hesitation – THESE RESTROOMS ARE THE CLEANEST WE HAVE EVER SEEN. Seriously, folks. When you walk into a bathhouse where all the fixtures are clearly at least 30-40+ years old and they are sparkling like the day they were installed, you have a good campground.

Food

Get at least one meal at the patio. From burgers to wings and nachos (and beer!) this licensed patio is the perfect spot to unwind when you don’t feel like cooking. And also – ice cream sundaes – need we say more??

Special Events

This park is always putting something on for guests. Whether its a hula hoop contest with prizes, Mother’s Day or Father’s day crafts or a Sunday Pancake Breakfast, this park does it right, with the perfect blend of fun that keeps you coming back. The Special event at our last trip was a performance from Stephanie Quayle, whose song “Winnebago” has become one of our Roadtripping anthems.

Local Area

For those that don’t know, the Niagara Falls area was a key strategic location in the war of 1812 and the history of the are is fantastic. Roughly 2 km from the front gates of the RV park is Lundy’s Lane Cemetery, which is worth a stroll and has interments dating back to 1820.

5km from the Park gate on Lundy’s Lane is the Lundy’s Lane Battlefield site and memorial, and includes information about this battle. Down the road 20 minutes lies Niagara on the Lake with Fort George and in nearby Queenston, the Laura Secord Homestead and Brock’s monument. If you don’t know how amazing and badass Laura Secord was, watch this short, 2 minute video:

Across the River in Niagara Falls NY, is Fort Niagara, which provides similar details about the war of 1812 from the American POV and is equally worth a visit.

Of course no trip to Niagara Falls would be complete without a trip to the Actual Falls. Everything from Ziplining to a cave that goes behind the falls is available. Whatever your interests and budget desire, you can do it at Niagara Falls.

Clifton Hill, just beside the falls, is the home of kitsch and the prime tourist trap. Some of the haunted houses are fun, however, but even scarier are the prices of the restaurants in that area. Move a few blocks away from the falls and you will find some fantastic restaurants worthy of the drive.
